I honestly never felt safe at school and that’s less because of the lack of security but more the ineptitude of the admin. I knew that the moment any serious thing happened, it was better to flee the school then follow instructions, actually did that twice. The SRO on my campus does not make me feel any safer than if he weren’t there. I wish I knew what he was actually doing. He makes $150k a year. What a joke. All I ever see him do is surf the internet in his office and drive around our parking lot once in a while. The SRO also gets a big pension when he retires. The difference is that the teachers are useful. I was disturbed that we pay half an SRO’s salary out of the school budget when they don’t actually offer a lot. In reality, if a crime has been committed, the schools can call dispatch for a patrol officer to come to take a report. Now, some SRO’s do have a better bedside manner than the patrol guys but not worth paying half their salary. I believe our police force cost my district somewhere up in the range of millions.
